WTHR Legends Honored as ‘Broadcast Icons’ in the AES 500 Festival Parade
INDIANAPOLIS (May 8, 2025) – The 500 Festival is proud to recognize Chuck Lofton and Dave Calabro as Broadcast Icons in this year’s AES 500 Festival Parade, celebrating their decades of dedication to bringing the excitement of May to fans across the nation. Their voices have become synonymous with race day traditions, and their contributions have left an indelible mark on the Month of May.
13Sunrise Meteorologist, Chuck Lofton, has been a familiar voice to race and Month of May fans across the state. He’s been a beloved icon at the 500 Festival Parade for countless years announcing the floats, balloons, marching bands, and INDYCAR drivers as they drive through the route. Outside of the Parade, Chuck has been a green flag waver at the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, been the guest of honor at Corporate Member Events, and been an ally to the 500 Festival.
Joining Chuck in this honor, is Dave Calabro, who many know as WTHR’s longtime sports director. Dave, who retired from WTHR at the end of 2024 after a distinguished career, continues to play an important role in the month of May festivities. He has served as a broadcaster for the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and interviews INDYCAR drivers as they move throughout the Parade route. Dave has been a long-time supporter of the 500 Festival.
Together, Chuck and Dave have helped shape Indianapolis’ celebration of the Indy 500, becoming synonymous with the event and strengthening its connection to the community. This year, they’ll each take a final lap of their own and drive the Parade route alongside their wives – something they’ve never had the chance to do before. It will be a special moment for both to see firsthand the many fans who have supported them for years, both at the AES 500 Festival Parade and every day on their TV screens.
“As they take their Final Lap, we are honored to celebrate their impact and legacy with a special place in this year’s parade. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Chuck and Dave for their decades of storytelling, their enthusiasm, and their deep commitment to bringing the magic of the Indianapolis 500 to fans, both near and far,” said Bob Bryant, President and CEO of the 500 Festival. “Their contributions have made the Month of May in Indianapolis an unforgettable experience, and their legacy will forever be a part of the beloved 500 Festival Parade.”
